Verizon is yet another monopoly screwing us because we have no choice. Verizon not only makes you pay to keep your number, but when you request call forwarding, they’ll lose your order until you lose your number. They’re too inept to give you one account for multiple numbers, so if you have multiple numbers, you’ll have multiple bills. Lots of fun. Yes, now you can use VOIP, but you can’t port a Verizon number, so you’re stuck paying Verizon. (For a business, it’s not such a good idea to give up a number you’ve had for years). Get the picture?

Even worse malpractice from Vonage. They are making you pay $39.99 just for disconnection. You are not even asking for porting their phone number.
They give you no handset for free when you start the service. In fact they charge activation fee and for the enabling device they ship in the beginning.
Vonage is on an advertising blitzkrieg that the regular landphone companies are ripping us off - but Vonage is itself a huge rip off. They blackmail you into keeping their service forever. I am sure this infringes upon some antitrust law or a consumer protection law or the fundamental right to freedom of choice in the market. Any ideas what recourses might be possible against Vonage’s immoral tricks? I am at a loss to understand how Vonage can do this with impunity when even the cellphone companies (that give out fancy, expensive phones for free) have come under scrutiny for the heavy penalties they charge for breaking the contract mid-term. Vonage, on the other hand, is charging for disconnection even when you are not trapped inside any term-contract and you received no free handset or device in the beginning - rather paid them for activation and start up costs.
